This is how many patients are left feeling when trying to determine what these titles mean and what they need to be looking for when choosing a Plastic Surgeon.
The truth is any doctor can claim to be a cosmetic or plastic surgeon, but American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) Member Surgeons have at least 6 years of surgical training and experience, with at least 3 years in plastic surgery. Their training, experience and certifications make them uniquely qualified to perform your cosmetic or reconstructive procedures.
It is scary to think that there are numerous Doctors, many of them in the Tampa Bay area, who are not Board Certified Plastic Surgeons but they are promoting and performing Plastic Surgery daily! Don’t assume just because their billboard, website and marketing materials say they perform Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery that they are Board Certified Plastic Surgeons- ALWAYS ASK! Some are Gynecologists, Dentists and Internal Medicine Doctors just to name a few. Board Certified to practice in their field and even perform general surgery in many cases- BUT NOT BOARD CERTIFIED TO PERFORM PLASTIC SURGERY!
